hp compaq 615 laptop

The HP Compaq 615 is an entry-level notebook for business users. Its twin is the HP Compaq 610; the main difference between the two is that the Compaq 610 relies on Intel processor technology while the Compaq 615 depends on AMD technology’s processing prowess.

The Compaq 615 offers a limited selection of important features needed for business processing. It has a speedy AMD Dual Core Processor that makes the device capable of handling regular business computing tasks. The 15.6-inch HD display provides clear and bright images as it is powered by the ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card. Mobility and connectivity is chiefly dependent on Bluetooth and WLAN. While there is a card reader, a DVD burner and a webcam installed, its ports are limited — only USB and VGA ports are available. There are no ports for HDMI, DVI, Fireware and eSata. There are, however, available security features that users will find valuable including the HP SpareKey, HP DriveLock, and HP Disk Sanitizer HP Drive Guard.

Pros

While the HP Compaq 615’s main attraction is the price, it has several features worth mentioning. Its build quality is excellent, nothing less than what you’d expect from the HP brand. It has built-in security features considered as necessities in business computing. We’re also fond of its bright and sharp HD display.

Cons

Limited ports

Conclusion

Notebookinfo.de reviewed this product (in German) and declares it as “an entry-level notebook with all the important features for professional use.” Laptopdirect.co.uk claims that because of the AMD processor, the HP Compaq 615 can run “even the most demanding applications at the drop of a hat.” For those looking for an entry-level business laptop, you must seriously consider what HP Compaq 615 has to offer.

  1. The Compaq 615 is billed as entry level, the question though is entry level into what?
I would say, having recently bought a new one is, entry into the lowest level of computer incompetence since the launch of ‘95. From the first touch of its power button it was trouble.
The auto installer formatted the 160 GB disk at only 32 GB, only cured by a manual HDD format. Plugging in the 3 G modem only works with a total restart, the sleep function restarts the machine in a very slow and dumb mode, it has a ‘plug and restart’ feature rather than a plug and play. It is standard with Windows Vista 32, but with 1 Gigabyte of RAM, it is basically unusable, Vista itself uses that much. Bearing in mind its designed for Vista 64, one has to wonder why it has Vista 32? With a GB RAM its just a light show. CRAZY. So what to do? Well, lets spend another $1000 for the correct amount of memory and the 64 OS it should have, but then there’s still only one problem…..it uses MS, and with the eventual cost (not to mention time) I may have rather bought a decent laptop to begin with. One other thing, there is no LED on the power supply, which is OK, but there isn’t one on the laptop either, how do I know for sure its charging?

reply to Richard: The last time I looked, 2GB of DDR2 RAM was around £20, not $1000. 1GB is roughly £10. A total of 2GB of RAM would be sufficient to get Vista running a lot better than it does with just 1GB.

I appreciate your comments were supposed to be sarcastic, but 32bit computing IS considered entry level nowadays. If you want to run a 64 bit OS – then clearly you are not looking for “Entry Level” computing.

I’ve owned mine now for 10 months, all and all not a bad laptop for its price! Love the HD screen and performance is more than enough if you don’t play games on it or do any large rendering work.
The downfalls for me are the few ports and where they’re located, the sound ports sits which is quite eratating when a speaker/headphone cable is plugged in. The charger port sits on the side instead of the back as well as the usb ports. The touch pad’s scroll is also not very good.

  7. Schalk says:

I meant to say the speaker/headphone cable jacks sits in front of the laptop.

i’ve been using compaq 615 for the past months im nt really content. the display has not been bad since, the keyboard is what really upsets me mostly.. when i press&hold akey esp when im typin, it doesnt repeat the character. it will kinda do tht for short while and in the next 3s it stops.moreover the LED of the Caps lock control key is not stable. the most dissapnt thing is the speaker. its just at on side n doesnt play any good sound..finally the processor overheats. compaq 615 is somthing else..

  10. Daragh says:

I own a 615 and so does my father, when Listening to music from say a website like youtube and listening through the earphones, its all good – until you open another app like Skype or something – then sound only comes through the speakers?? the MS sounds still come through the earphones but you have to reboot to get any other sounds coming out of the earphones – Its REALLY ANNOYING and no boday has a clue why? or any solutions!! anyone who can help, let me know cheers.

  11. Prop says:

The sound is a bit poor. The keypad is excellent as well as the display, however the ports issue is really a big one.

  12. john lino says:

My only concern on this model after having used it for 2 months now is that it gets pretty hot! My friends jokingly call it an oven. The proccessor also struggles when faced with some mediocre tasks like multiple file transfers which is disappointing regarding it’s proccessing prowess. I think i would have preffered an intel proccessor.

  13. isaac esuantse says:

my compaq 615 gives out too much heat from the vents on the left and i waana know if there is any user out there with a similar problem.unlike the 610 the 615 generates too much heat

I bought a compaq 615 and are running windows seven. this is a pleasure to use compared to xp and the laptop handles the programmes with ease. The hd screen is as clear as ever and dvd’s are extremely clear. I don’t know of anything to complain about. Great buy.Only the price in South Africa is around R6000.00
