Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 – Review

Fujitsu LifeBook E8410

Currently, there are two Fujitsu LifeBook E8410s available in the business laptop market – one made years ago with an Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 Processor running at 2.2GHz with 4MB L2 Cache, and the updated version with Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 Processor clocking at 2.1GHz with 3MB L2 Cache. Of the two versions available for the Fujitsu LifeBook E8410, some prefer the older E8410 as it has faster clock speed and more cache, but the newer one is more efficient as it has double the memory at 2GB, which allows faster processing of graphics media.

The Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 – whether the old or the new one – is designed and marketed as a laptop that would appeal to business people. With regards to the appearance, nothing significant has changed. It still has the matte black plastic lid with some gloss on the front lid and the silver keyboard tray blotted with weird-placed white keys. The Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 may not be that professional looking, but it looks good enough to be displayed in public.

When it comes to the laptop’s performance specifications, much has changed. The newer one has a Penryn processor, which runs at lower clock speed than the older Santa Rosa chip. The updated version has 2GB of RAM and 20% more storage space at 120GB. That means more space to store in those files that cannot be stowed in the older Fujitsu LifeBook E8410.

Pros:

The Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 is cool and quiet. While most laptops produce a whizzing noise coming from their fan during start up, the LifeBook has none of that. It is one of its best features. Even when running, the fan could be barely heard. At its peak usage, the fan noise comes at an almost indiscernible low level. As for the heat, the laptop gets a bit warm but at is still at a bearable level.

Due to the Intel Penryn technology, the Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 is able to outperform most 15-inch business laptops. Unlike other laptops, the Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 contains a troop of ports that are compatible with both present and past technologies. One rarely sees a laptop nowadays that includes ExpressCard and PCMCIA slots, but the Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 has them both. It allows users to interface both with newer and older technologies.

Cons:

The Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 has a 15.4” wide-screen WXGA display with acceptable resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, which somewhat falls short for a laptop in its size range.

Another weakness of the Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 is its build quality. Although the laptop’s chassis feels sturdy and solid, some areas – particularly near the optical drive and screen display – suffers from some plastic flex. Sturdiness is expected for a mobile thinking machine as it has to endure the bumps expected during regular travels in a laptop bag.

The most obvious disadvantage of the Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 is its price tag. Simply put, it is overpriced. Other notebooks with similar specifications are priced around $200 to $500 cheaper than the Fujitsu LifeBook E8410.

Conclusion:

The Fujitsu LifeBook E8410 is a notebook as good as any other. Setting aside its build quality and price, this laptop is a good option for business professionals in terms of performance and range of features.
