Hardcore gamers have a reason to celebrate after Asus added another monster laptop to its mobile gaming army.  Making a gaming laptop is not easy though, since there is less space to fit in those powerful components than on a tower casing of a gaming desktop.  Ordinarily, a 15-inch laptop would weigh around three to four pounds, that is, with mediocre processor, some RAM and perhaps without dedicated graphics and an optical drive.

Asus, however, was able to cramp powerful component into a laptop’s chassis by increasing its dimensions and adding manageable weight.  The result was its gaming laptops that include the Asus G60J and the Asus G51J.  These gaming laptops are two of the few that are blessed to be loaded with Intel’s latest processor – the Core i7.  With this processor, any laptop is sure to dish out a powerful performance.

The Asus G51J is powered by Intel’s Core i7 720QM processor, which clocks at 1.6 GHz and has Turbo Boost speed of 2.80 GHz, or the 820QM processor, which runs at a clock speed of 1.73 GHz and can be turbo boosted to 3.06 GHz. It is backed by up to 4 GB of DDR3 read access memory.  With this combo, the Asus G51J could provide lagless computing even when accessing hardcore applications.

A gaming laptop often has to deal with heavy and memory-hungry graphics that makes up almost all of the recent games today.  So, practically, any gaming laptop should have a reliable graphics backup that could handle any hardcore games, especially those 3D ones.  Asus virtually made a real gaming laptop in Asus G51J by embedding the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M graphics card, loaded with 1 GB of VRAM.  With this graphics support, even hardcore games that require 3D rendering could be played with the Asus G51J.

The G51J could support two hard disks.  A user has the option to loaded either 320 GB hard disk alongside another 320 GB HD. One could load his rig with up to 1 TB of storage space.  With this large amount of disk space, storing large multimedia files and even those HD movies would be of no concern.

The Asus G51J also comes with a Blu-Ray-DVD combo optical drive, which is very essential when installing one’s favorite games.  One may play Blu-Ray movies and burn files in DVD format.

A very noticeable difference between the Asus G51J and the Asus G60J is their display resolution.  While the G60J sports a larger display, it has a less than ideal resolution of 1366 x 768, short of the usual 1080p HD resolution.  Asus, however, made a very big improvement in the Asus G51J by giving it a 1920 x 1200 resolution.  Gamers would surely be delighted on having this amount of resolution, since it allows clearer and more vivid graphics.

Aside from the very nice video output (a result of the dedicated graphics and high-resolution display), the audio experience is something to be bragged about.  The G51J is spiced up with high-end Altec Lansing audio speakers.

Like its G60J brother, the Asus G51J is one of the most portable gaming laptops around.  Although weighing a quite heavy 3.3 kg, the G51J’s weight is nothing compared to having a mobile gaming laptop.  The Asus G60J measures at 37.5 x 26.5 x 4.1 cm.

Pros

The Asus G51J is a leviathan of its own right – awesome processing prowess, excellent memory backup, graphics support, large storage space, high-resolution display and splendid audio.

Cons

Asus G51J’s powerful specs eat up its battery energy faster than regular laptops. The Asus G51J’s battery won’t last for more than two hours of usage.

Conclusion

With an estimated price of $1,700, the Asus G51J is a big improvement over the G60J, resolution-wise. The Asus G51J is an excellent gaming laptop – with features and specs that are the envy of any gamer.  Despite its short battery life, the Asus G60J is an ideal laptop for one’s gaming needs.
