Posted on February 16th, 2010 | by admin

Acer Aspire AS5940G

Following after the footsteps of several successful models of the Acer Aspire family, the Acer Aspire AS5940G is the most powerful of them so far. It is one of the first models to implement Intel’s Core i5 technology. A little below the Core i7 processor, which is dubbed as the “smartest” core to ever grace the motherboards of computers, the Core i5 nevertheless promises a smooth and seamless performance that will surely satisfy even the most demanding user.

Clocked at 1.6 GHz, the Acer Aspire AS5940G supports its processor with a massive memory capacity of 4 gigabytes. There’s more than enough RAM for the laptop to process several programs simultaneously, including those that are hungry in memory in order to operate. With the AS5940G, you have at your disposal a very dependable machine that will not waste your time with lags and glitches especially when doing tasks like video editing and graphics rendering.

Acer Travelmate 6493 – Review

Posted on December 13th, 2009 | by admin

Acer_Travelmate_6493

The Acer Travelmate 6493 comes from a long line of business-oriented Acer laptops . What features can you expect to access from the 6493? Would it be worth the money you invest for it? This review will present to you the features, the pros, the cons and what we think about the 6493.

SPECS:

  AVAILABLE OPTIONS (From Acer’s Website)
CPU Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8700(3MB L2 cache, 2.53GHz, 1066MHz FSB)Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8600(3MB L2 cache, 2.4GHz, 1066MHz FSB)Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8400(3MB L2 cache, 2.26GHz, 1066MHz FSB)
RAM Up to 4GB (2GB installed in one of two memory slots) DDR2 667 SDRAM
Screen size 14.1″ (1280 x 800) TFT LCD with white LED backlight
Operating system Genuine Windows 7 ProfessionalGenuine Windows Vista Business
Battery life Up to 7.5 hours depending on battery type
Graphics Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

PROS:

Like all the other Travelmate laptops, the 6493 has its strongest point in its security features. This is designed to protect from information theft, which can actually bring a business down if the important information falls into the wrong hands. The 6493 has every security feature that you need, including a fingerprint reader and a feature designed to prevent data-loss from shock: the Disk Anti-Shock Protection which is proprietary to Acer and can be found in all its offerings.

Though its screen is smaller than its siblings at only 14.1 inches, it more than makes up for that drawback by having a good resolution of 1200×800. This resolution makes for great details and graphics, plus giving the user enough room to place windows side by side to aid in his multitasking requirements.

The screen is also backlit by white light emitting diodes. This would reduce the glare that can be produced when the sun is behind the user’s back. This is likely to happen when taking the laptop and using it outdoors, and the backlit can surely help reduce the irritating and distracting glare from the sun.

The 6493 has enough battery life for mobile usage. The nine-cell configuration allows the user to use the laptop for up to 7 hours and 30 minutes as estimated by the manufacturer.

Convenience and ease of usage is what one can expect from the 6493. It has several function keys that can help access important programs easily. For example, it has easy launch buttons that can invoke the web browser or email client with one push. This allows for faster operation since the user does not have to manually open the executable file.

Last but not the least, the 6493 features drivers and software to allow it to be hooked up to an external monitor. This can be very handy in business meetings where you may need to plug the laptop to a projector.

CONS:

Although it comes with several connectivity features including support for plugging in to a separate monitor, the 6493 lacks an HDMI port to connect the laptop to an HDTV.

A feature shared by other Travelmate series laptops is the integrated graphics card. This hampers or limits its ability to process graphics. Though you can play older and lighter games on the 6493, you shouldn’t try to play the later games especially the ones that feature 3D processing because you will be sorely disappointed with the 6493.

CONCLUSION:

Looking at its pros and cons, we can conclude that the Travelmate 6493 is a good option for those who are looking to use a notebook for mostly for business functions as it is certainly not for gaming. Despite a serious lack in graphics processing power,  the 6493 is still formidable with all its security features plus its convenience in usage. The business person will surely appreciate the ease and the convenience in using the 6493.

Acer Travelmate 6293 – Review

Posted on December 12th, 2009 | by admin

acer_travelmate_6293

From accomplished laptop maker Acer comes another addition to the Travelmate Series: the Acer Travelmate 6293.

Just like its predecessors, the Acer Travelmate 6293 is designed as a business laptop first and general computer users laptop second. The big question really is whether the average entrepreneur can expect satisfactory performance and output from the Travelmate 6293.

This article will show the features, the strong points and the shortcomings of the Travelmate 6293. We will also give you our opinion on whether the 6293 could be considered a good buy.

SPECS:

  AVAILABLE OPTIONS (From Acer’s Website)
CPU Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8700
(3MB L2 cache, 2.53GHz, 1066MHz FSB)Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8600
(3MB L2 cache, 2.4GHz, 1066MHz FSB)
RAM Up to 4GB (2GB installed in one of two memory slots) DDR2 667 SDRAM
Screen size 12.1″ (1280 x 800) TFT LCD
Operating system Genuine Windows 7 ProfessionalGenuine Windows Vista Business
Battery life Up to 7 hours depending on battery type
Graphics Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

PROS:

At first glance, you can tell that the 6293 is indeed a powerful beast. It is operated by an Intel Core 2 Duo technology processor (you have a choice between the P8700 and the P8600) supported by up to 4 gigabytes of random access memory. This shows its capability to process programs faster with enough room to spare, as speed and access is of ultimate importance to those in business.

Data sharing and connectivity are two factors where the 6293 has an edge. Armed with three USB ports, the owner is not only able to plug in more than one external flash drives for file sharing, he can also use the extra ports to put in external keyboards or mouse.

Another good thing about the 6293 is that it’s very light. This makes carrying easier and more convenient for the businessman. The Travelmate 6293 weighs only 4.7 pounds or 2.1 kilograms.

Battery life is also not a problem with the 6293. The configuration may vary but the 6293’s batteries can last up to 7 hours of optimal usage. When heavy applications are running, the 6293 is able to last for at 4.5 hours on six-cell batteries.

CONS:

One thing that can make the 6293 difficult to use would be its LCD screen. At 12 inches, it has the smallest screen in the lineup of Travelmate laptops. Even though Acer has given it a highly detailed resolution of 1280×800, some users may find it difficult to view such a very small screen.

Another disadvantage that the 6293 has in common with other fellow Travelmate laptops is its low graphics processing power. Armed with only an integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD processor, the 6293 is quite weak at processing heavy duty graphics which is what the latest games are using. Truly, the 6293 is at its best processing business applications.

CONCLUSION

The 6293 is poised to function smoothly for a thriving business, although it is seriously hindered by a small screen. However, it does give the user the capability to multi-task with ease. Its high resolution does allow the user to stack up separate windows and view them simultaneously.

The verdict: the 6293 is suited for business use only. If you want to use it for gaming, it’s best to stick to the older games rather than the new ones because its integrated graphics card cannot process them.

All in all, for the business user, the 6293 is a good catch.

Acer Travelmate 5730 – Review

Posted on December 12th, 2009 | by admin

acer_travelmate_5730

The Acer Travelmate 5730 is one of the latest additions to Acer’s long-running Travelmate family of business oriented laptops.

It is in the interest of consumers to make sure that the laptop that will be chosen is indeed worth the money put in for its purchase. In this case, let us look at the features and the details about the Travelmate 5730 so you can form your opinion whether or not you would want to buy this laptop from Acer.

SPECS

  AVAILABLE OPTIONS (From Acer’s Website)
CPU Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8600(3MB L2 cache, 2.40GHz, 1066MHz FSB)Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T6670(2MB L2 cache, 2.20GHz, 800MHz FSB)

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T6570

(2MB L2 cache, 2.10GHz, 800MHz FSB)

RAM Up to 4GB (2GB installed in one of two memory slots) DDR2 667 SDRAM
Screen size 15.4″ (1280 x 800) TFT LCD
Operating system Genuine Windows 7 ProfessionalGenuine Windows Vista Business
Battery life Up to 5 hours depending on battery type
Graphics Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

PROS:

Similar to the other Travelmate laptops by Acer, the 5730’s strong points are in its security features. With data security being important for the businessman, Acer has given the 5730 as well as its siblings the essential capabilities to safeguard important data. One of these is the fingerprint reader, which one can activate in order to restrict access to the laptop. Second would be the Disc Anti-Shock Protection, a proprietary firmware system exclusive to Acer notebooks that prevents data loss from impact shock. The DASP simply shuts the hard drives down if the sensor detects that it is in a state of free fall.

Power is also on the 5730’s side. With Intel Core2Duo technology powering its operation, the 5730 is apparently poised to provide smooth and fast processing. This is further enhanced by its large memory capacity: the 5730’s motherboard is able to accommodate up to 4 gigabytes of memory, with a minimum of 2 gigabytes. This is more than enough to provide its powerful processor the necessary memory to process programs.

The Travelmate 5730 features a neat 15.4-inch liquid crystal display. Furthermore, this LCD is able to output a display resolution of 1280×800. This resolution provides enough graphic detail for the user, plus it also allows for easy multi-tasking. Browsing web pages is made easy as well: scroll is minimal with such a resolution because most of the web pages these days are optimized for lower resolutions than what the 5730’s screen outputs.

Further essential features that you can find with the 5730 include: a 5-in-1 card reader, four USB ports, BlueTooth, eSATA ports and an ExpressCard/54 slot for connecting to external hard drives.

Lastly, let us discuss its battery life. With 5 hours of battery life, the business person has enough power to access the Internet or review files while on the way to an important business meeting. It can also provide enough time to finish work or to save important files in the event of a power interruption.

CONS:

The 5730, as a business laptop, shares the same weakness as its Travelmate family members: low power when it comes to processing graphics. Having only a graphics display card integrated into its chipset, the Travelmate 5730’s graphics processing power is severely limited making it inappropriate for heavy gaming.

The 5730 also lacks an HDMI port for connecting to an external HDTV.

CONCLUSION:

A good business laptop has only a few essential features to watch out for. First, it would be fast processing power, and the 5730 certainly has that. Second, the user should be able to multi-task or to browse different documents simultaneously with ease. The 5730 has that as well.

Given those advantages, we could say that you cannot go wrong with a purchase of a 5730 not unless your intent is to use it for gaming because that is where it is weakest. Otherwise, it’s a good choice.

Acer Travelmate 5530 – Review

Posted on December 12th, 2009 | by admin

tm5530

The Acer Travelmate 5530 is one of the five latest models in the Acer Travelmate series.  This laptop is touted to be extremely ideal for the thriving entrepreneur, which makes us wonder what it is exactly that the 5530 offers its potential buyers. Read through and find out.

SPECS:

  AVAILABLE OPTIONS (From Acer’s Website)
CPU AMD Turion™ X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor RM-75(1MB L2 cache, 2.2GHz)AMD Athlon™ X2 Dual-Core Processor QL-65(1MB L2 cache, 2.1GHz)

AMD Athlon™ X2 Dual-Core Processor QL-64

(1MB L2 cache, 2.1GHz)

RAM Up to 4GB (2GB installed in one of two memory slots) DDR2 667 SDRAM
Screen size 15.4″ (1280 x 800) TFT LCD
Operating system Genuine Windows 7 ProfessionalGenuine Windows Vista Business
Battery life Up to 2.5 hours life depending on configuration and usage
Graphics Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

PROS:

The 5530’s strength lies in its powerful processor. A businessman can easily process one task after another or to multitask effectively with the Dual-Core technology from AMD Athlon, the direct competitor of the more popular Intel processors. Competing directly with each other, users can expect more or less similar power and performance from the AMD dual core processor that the 5530 uses. The 5530’s large memory capacity also complements its processor speed greatly, with up to 4 gigabytes allowed.

The 5530 is a very light laptop, and at first glance could be very ideal for the traveling businessman except for its battery life. The machine weighs less than 7 pounds, and it is also equipped with the proprietary Disc Anti-Shock Protection. This DASP, together with the anti-shock properties of the laptop’s chassis, prevents the hard drive from physical damage incurred during free-fall situations.

The DASP is also very essential for the business. Aside from providing protection from shock damage, it also prevents the impact from resulting to data loss. The DASP’s firmware also shuts down the hard drive before the laptop hits a hard surface, protecting files from damage.

The 5530 comes with a neat 15.4-inch liquid crystal display. The LCD is capable of a maximum resolution of 1280×800. Again, we could see how the 5530 is advantageous towards multitasking. The high resolution allows for opening different windows in minimized mode so that the user can easily look at one document and another without changing windows.

CONS:

The weakest point that one can find in the Acer 5530, however, is its battery time. Even with low usage, the laptop cannot be used continually for four hours. Manufacturer’s estimate is only at 2 and a half hours of usage. This is at optimal usage as well, with no power-consuming features turned on.

Though it wouldn’t matter to a businessman, the 5530’s integrated graphics card can also be seen as a disadvantage for the user. Integrated graphics card is not as powerful as specific graphic cards, which are capable of running 3D graphics. This is something that the 5530 cannot do, but like mentioned earlier, the laptop is designed for the business user who neither has the time nor the love for gaming.

CONCLUSION:

With a very powerful processor and large memory capacity, the 5530 has everything that one needs for the business. Its battery life may actually be the deciding factor for some potential customers to turn their backs on it. But this wouldn’t be an issue to those who intend to use the laptop as a replacement for the desktop PC. Business meetings conducted remotely probably won’t have the user relying on the batteries anyway.  For most people, 2 hours and a half is more than enough for accessing important data on the car on the way to a meeting.

To conclude, if you are thinking of using the 5530 for gaming and for more intense multimedia purposes, look somewhere else. But if it will be used for purely business matters, you certainly would not go wrong with the 5530.
