Dell Allienware M15X – Review

Posted on February 2nd, 2010 | by admin

alienware-m15x-notebook[1]

The Dell Alienware M15x is considered the 15-inch monster of the gaming world.  Not only does it sport a monster-like design, the Dell Alienware M15x also comes with some seriously intimidating specs, especially with its choices of processor.

A laptop made to cater to hardcore gamers, the Dell Alienware M15x first came out with Intel’s Core 2 Extreme X9000 powering its system.  This processor was already a very potent one, and it made other gaming laptops look like a turtle racing with the rabbit-like Dell Alienware M15x.   Dell turbo boosted the Dell Alienware M15x by evolving its processing unit into the noteworthy Intel Core “i” technology.

The present Dell Alienware M15x comes with two processor options – the Intel Core i5 and the Intel Core i7.  The Intel Core i7 is the latest and most powerful processor of this time, but the Intel Core i5 is not going to lose a lot in processing prowess.  If the Intel Core i7 is the current king of processors, then the Intel Core i5 is definitely the first-born prince.  With the king making the headlines, let us focus for at the prince, the Intel Core i5.

Dell Latitude XT – Review

Posted on February 1st, 2010 | by admin

dell-xt[1]

The Latitude XT is Dell’s first-ever contestant in the Tablet PC market.  Of course, it is a laptop, and at the same time, a tablet.  The Dell Latitude XT is targeted towards business people who need both the technology of a mobile PC and a tablet.

A tablet is very useful especially when doing inventory jobs and when one needs to hold the machine while inputting data.  A laptop is ideal when one needs to handle some computing jobs and work applications.  Imagine having both in one machine.

As a cross between a laptop and a tablet, the Dell Latitude XT is integrated with technologies found in two worlds.  An example is pen and touch technology.  Even when in laptop mode, one can access the Dell Latitude XT without using a mouse or the touchpad – just simply use a finger or two to click, double-click or zoom an image.  This is made possible by the N-Trig touchscreen technology.  This enables the Dell Latitude XT’s 12.1-inch screen to respond either with a pen or with one’s finger.  A user can also use the pen without worrying about his palm — which would likely be touching the screen – thanks to the Dell Latitude XT’s good palm rejection feature.

Dell Studio XPS 13 – Review

Posted on January 13th, 2010 | by admin

Dell Studio XPS 13 Laptop

Featured in: Dell Studio Series.

The Dell Studio XPS 13 is one of the five units produced by Dell as an answer to the world’s need for a personalized and customizable laptop that can suit just about any need. Plus, its XPS tag is meant to indicate its capacity to accommodate extreme performance requirements.

For starters, it is given a 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9800 processor. This is supported by SDRAM capacity of up to 8 gigabytes in DDR3 memory. You can expect smooth operation with the XPS 13, even if it is processing some of those heavier programs like photo editing software and others. This is complemented by a range of powerful processors to choose from: you can select the GeForce 9400M G chipset which does not have its own video memory, or you can pick the GeForce 9500M and GeForce G210M graphics cards with memories of 256 megabytes and 512 megabytes, respectively.

Dell Studio 17 – Review

Posted on January 5th, 2010 | by admin

laptop_studio_17

The Dell Studio 17 was mentioned in Core i7 laptops.

The Dell Studio 17 is a top-ranging model produced under the Dell Studio series, which offers flexibility in choosing the features of the unit. The Series came about due to people’s needs to be able to tweak the features of their laptops, much as they would a desktop.

What this means is that the Dell Studio 17 helps one to arrive at a unit that will answer his computing needs, whether it is for business, for gaming or for entertainment.

The Studio 17 offers high quality options for your specifications as well. For example, when choosing your hard disk, you can choose from 320-gigabytes and up to 640-gigabytes of hard disk space. This means you can have a lot of space for important files as well as personal items such as movies, music, documents and many others. There’s always a space for them with Dell’s Studio 17.

Dell Studio 15 -Review

Studio_15

The Dell Studio 15 was mentioned in Core i7 laptops.

Flexibility is at its best with the Dell Studio 15. This is in line with Dell’s claim that the Studio series is the answer to the world’s need for a highly customizable laptop to suit just about any need, whether it may be for gaming, for running business processes or to provide entertainment for the user.

Indeed, the Studio 15 is very flexible. For example, when you look at processors, you can find that you have quite a range to choose from. You have a choice of getting any of the Intel Pentium Dual Core, Intel Core 2 Duo and Intel Core i7 processors, with speeds of up to 1.7 GHz and 3.06 GHz turbo mode. This means that anyone can choose a processor that will be ideal for their needs as well as their budget restrictions. These options are not just ordinary processors; the Core i7 for example is considered the “next” step in processor technology. The Dual Core and Core 2 Duo are powerful as well.

Complementing this strength in processing is an equally formidable random access memory space. The Dell Studio 15 buyer can get up to 8-gigabytes of RAM to power the unit’s processing. Such a combination can only mean smooth and seamless processing even in memory-hungry applications and games.

Dell Studio 14z – Review

Posted on January 2nd, 2010 | by admin

Studio_14z

One of the two little brothers of the Dell Studio series, the Dell Studio 14z is poised to stand out among the competitors in its own price range and class. Despite being smaller than its siblings, the Studio 14z is no way inferior when it comes to features.

The 14z is powered by the same processors that give life to its bigger counterparts in the Studio series. Despite having lower options, the Intel Core 2 Duo technology has enough beef in it to boost the performance of the Dell Studio 14z and keep it competitive. It has a big memory capacity as well, with the maximum installable memory reaching 5 gigabytes. That’s quite a lot of memory for a small guy. This would help it process heavy programs without the annoying lags and delays associated with memory-hungry applications hogging all the memory available.

DELL XPS M1530 – Review

Posted on December 8th, 2009 | by admin

DELL_XPS_M1530

The Dell the XPS M1530 is brought to us by a company that has been in the business of manufacturing laptops for quite some time. The XPS M1530 was designed in response to customers who complain about their laptops being rather thick and heavy. As a result, Dell released in 2007 what many have said was the sexiest laptop of the year — the Dell XPS M1330. It was the direct opposite of their old laptops since this was light and thin. Some customers found the screen to be quite small and as always, Dell listened to the feedback. It came out with the Dell XPS M1530. It is a lot similar to its predecessor but it has a larger screen.

Specifications

  AVAILABLE OPTIONS (From Dell’s Website)
CPU 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7500
RAM 2GB DDR2-667 SDRAM
Screen size 15.4-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) CCFL glossy screen
Operating system Windows Vista Home Premium
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GT with 256MB GDDR3

The first thing you’ll notice about Dell’s XPS M1530 is its soft-touch finish which is available in three different colors: Tuxedo Black, Alphine White or Crimson Red. It’s not too flashy that you might hesitate to bring it to a board meeting. Rather, it has just the right amount of style. Despite its 15″ screen, it only weighs about 2.6 kilograms which is quite impressive. Aside from its attractive colors, the XPS M1530 is made up of steel, magnesium and aluminum. That being said, you can expect good stability and strong pressure resistance.

The keyboard is firm and has little or no flex at all. The full-sized keys make typing easier and they offer very good cushion.  The only problem you may encounter is that your fingernails may get caught under the keys but it would only happen if you have long fingernails. Dell’s touchpad is also excellent. It is very responsive and has a pleasant texture.

If you like to listen to music, the M1530 may not give you what you need as it doesn’t have the ultimate sound system. It does not have a built-in subwoofer. The speakers are located at the top of the keyboard.

If you’re a typical gamer, then its 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 processor and NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GT video card could be just right for you. Hardcore gamers won’t be as impressed. When playing Crysis for instance, it only averages at around 20 frames per second. You would also encounter problems when playing racing games like Need for Speed’s Pro Street. You practically have no choice but to play some levels on low resolutions otherwise playing it would just become frustrating. But if you’re planning to use it on things other than games, you won’t have a problem.

Aside from the sound and the frame rates, there is not much you can say against the M1530. The only thing you would probably have is its 1,280 x 800 resolution. Although it doesn’t give much in terms of desktop space, it more than makes up for it in terms of image quality.

If you liked the M1330, then don’t hesitate to get the M1530. It is no wonder that some are calling it as the M1330 on steroids. The XPS 1530 is undoubtedly one of the best 15″ laptops available on the market. The price tag is definitely worth the cool design, the power and the excellent ergonomics of the Dell XPS M1530.

Dell Vostro 1720 – Review

Posted on October 28th, 2009 | by admin

Dell_Vostro_1720

The Dell Vostro 1720 is a business laptop designed to appeal to people who want to hang onto the resolution of a desktop but don’t have the space for it. The Dell Vostro 1720 is also ideal for people who want a 17” widescreen portable thinking machine and wouldn’t mind carrying an extra-large laptop for extra weight. An entry-level configuration of this laptop weighs around 6.8 lbs, around 26% heavier than the entry-level version of its 15” cousin, the Dell Vostro 1520. It should be noted though that it is lighter than its competition in the 17” category.

Like the Dell Vostro 1520, the Dell Vostro 1720 comes in a wide variety of configurations, suited to the needs of the computer user. A budget configuration of Intel Celeron 900 for the processor and a standard 160GB SATA for the disk storage may do. However, if the user wants a desktop replacement unit, it is recommended to upgrade to Core 2 Duo T9550 2.66 GHz and 128 GB Solid State Drive. (more…)

Dell Vostro 1520 – Review

Posted on October 26th, 2009 | by admin

Dell Vostro 1520

The Dell Vostro 1520 is targeted towards small to medium-sized businesses. Bearing a weight of only 5.42 lbs and having measurements of 357mm x 258mm x 38mm, the Dell Vostro 1520 is a very portable machine that offers an extensive range of configurations. This laptop has screen size of 15.4”, a tad smaller than its 15.6” HP Compaq 610 competition. Nonetheless, the 15.4” of screen is nothing to complain about. The screen is of adequate size for small business entrepreneurs to be able to work on various office applications with ease.

The user can choose from the available configurations for the Dell Vostro 1520 depending on his or her specific needs. A buyer may choose a budget configuration of Intel Celeron 900 for the processor and a standard 160GB SATA for the disk storage. One may choose to boost the configuration to a racy Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 2.66 GHz and fast 128 GB Solid State Drive, while having an optional Nvidia 9300 graphics. The downside is that extra weight will be carried on this laptop once the upgrades are made. (more…)
