Google together with Samsung is about to release the worlds first chromebook called the Samsung Chromebook series 5, on the 15th of June 2011. This was announced with much hype on the 12th of May. The Samsung Chromebook Series 5 will be the first laptop released to showcase Google’s Web-based operating system, Google Chrome.

Once released the Samsung Chromebook series 5 will be available on Amazon.com, Best Buy and other stores in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands. You will be pleased to know that , at a starting price of only $429, the Samsung Chromebook series 5 is cheaper than an iPad, standard laptop or MacBook.

Google Chrome is said to be built for speed, simplicity and security. And when compared with the Cr-48 prototype Chrome OS notebook, one quickly notes that the Samsung Chromebook series 5 is much faster. The biggest change from the Cr-48 prototype is that the Chromebook has an Intel dual-core processor, giving it a significant and much needed performance boost.

One of the outstanding qualities of the Samsung Chromebook Series 5is that it boots up in under 10 seconds from a cold boot and when waking from sleep you simply open the lid and you’re ready to start working.  The Samsung Chromebook series 5 is great for uploading images, videos and other multimedia but it also has some serious shortcomings, like the fact that cannot run Skype or Photoshop (at least not without a virtual thin client like citrix). In short, it is not meant to be a powerhouse, but rather it is intended to perform basic data entry and web surfing jobs.

Let’s see how this is a cut above the Lenovo G550 – 295R6U:

 

Let’s start with the price tag. The Lenovo G550 – Grey – 29586SU is priced at a very reasonable $499.00. This laptop is powered by the Intel® Core™ Duo T4400 processor with a RAM of 4 GB 1066MHz. Since this is a newly-released model, the Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 operating system is integrated in the Lenovo G550 – Grey – 29586SU. Storage is one plus point in this laptop with a staggering 320GB of hard disk space! Now that’s really something in a value laptop.

 

Even if this is just an average laptop, the media and video features are still a cut above the rest with its 15.6″ WXGA LED Backlight TFT monitor with a resolution of 1366 x 768, which is standard in most HD devices. However, the Lenovo G550 – Grey – 29586SU only has the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M integrated graphics card, which is kind of a sore point for hardcore gamers.
